Pioneers knock down Eagles in offensive showcase

VERONA, Wis. – Baseball wrapped up their regular season with a NACC Tournament tuneup Monday. They took on the UW-Platteville Pioneers in nonconference action. The Pioneers (21-19) bested the Eagles (19-19) in a high-octane 12-8 affair.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UW-Platteville rolled early, leading 7-0 after the top of the second. They sent a three-run homer over the right field fence in the first, and a two-run shot to right in the second.

- Edgewood University bounced back in the bottom of the second. After a failed pickoff attempt helped bring Gavin Wesling home, the Eagles loaded up the bases. Hayden Hellenbrand walked in a run before Dominic Lee sent a two-RBI single to center field. Jacob Carney followed with an RBI single to left to cut the edge to 7-5.

- Aidan Kammer kickstarted the Edgewood University offense in the fourth inning, a double to left center sending home one. Nolan Brozyna brought in Kammer with a sacrifice fly to center field to even things 7-7.

- The Pioneers and Eagles traded runs in the fifth, a single to right field and a Hellenbrand sacrifice fly to left leaving things at 8-8.  A two-RBI single in the seventh helped UW-Platteville pull away. While Edgewood University got close to retaking the lead in the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers shut down the Eagles bats. A homer to center and an RBI single to right center in the eighth provided UW-Platteville with cushion as they closed out the game.

- Anthony Massa and Connor Gresens were forces to be reckoned with towards the top of the Pioneer order. Massa swung 4-for-4 with five runs and a pair of doubles, while Gresens hit 4-for-4 with three runs, six RBIs, and a home run.

- Logan Kottmeyer pitched four scoreless innings for UW-Platteville in the win, striking out four.

- Carney hit 4-for-6 with a run and an RBI.
