Eagles defeat Falcons in monumental five-setter

MEQUON, WIS. – Men's Volleyball took part in another NACC battle Saturday as they continued to fight for a NACC Tournament berth. They faced off with the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. The Eagles (8-12, 5-6 NACC) rallied, winning 3-2 (25-15, 12-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-14) against the Falcons (6-15, 4-6 NACC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College stormed ahead 12-7 as their offense took over the first set. While Concordia Wisconsin would close within 16-13, a 9-2 burst shut the door on a dominant first set.
 
- The Eagles outhit the Falcons .462-to-.061 in the frame.
 
- The Falcons flipped the script in the second set. While the Eagles would cut an early 13-8 edge down to 15-12, Concordia Wisconsin finished the set on a 10-0 burst.
 
- The Falcons won the hitting battle .333-to- -.129 in the second set.
 
- The two squads jockeyed for position in the third set, with neither side holding more than a two-point edge until a 4-2 stretch pushed Concordia Wisconsin ahead 14-11. Edgewood College replied with a 5-1 burst for a slim 16-15 edge. After a Falcon 5-1 run and an Eagle 5-2 answer left things tied 23-23, Concordia Wisconsin finished the third set with a kill and an ace for a 2-1 edge.
 
- Determined to not stay down, Edgewood College pushed ahead 8-5 early with three unanswered points in the fourth frame. A 5-2 response from the Falcons had the squads tied up 11-11 as the teams found themselves locked in battle. Down 17-16, the Eagles surged ahead on a 7-2 rally as they forced a decisive fifth set.
 
- Back-to-back points had Edgewood College up 6-4 early as they duked it out with the Falcons. The two-point edge held until late, where the Concordia Wisconsin defense took over on a three-point run for a 14-13 lead. The Eagles offense took over for the set and match with a 3-0 run featuring a pair of kills.
 
 
- Edgewood College outhit the Falcons .168-to-.122 on the day. They also held advantages in assists (59-to-38), digs (71-to-50), and kills (61-to-43)
 
- Carsyn Stringfellow put together a double-double with 16 kills and 19 digs. Ryder Hill-Zastrow swung for 15 kills on 30 attempts with a .367 hitting percentage.
 
- Owen Hartjes and Owen Voigt each had six blocks. Hartjes also earned 12 kills on 26 swings with a .346 hitting percentage.
 
- Will Gehrke anchored the grinding effort with 54 assists. Jack Mullane and Gavin Patterson posted 16 and 15 digs respectively.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The 59 assists and 61 kills were both new program bests. Gehrke's 54 assists is also a new individual record.
 
- Voigt's six blocks were a personal high. Stringfellow earned new bests in kills (16) and digs (19).
 
- The victory was the first in program history against the Falcons.
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles will return to the Todd Wehr Edgedome next Saturday for another key NACC matchup. They'll take on the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks for Senior Day and their regular season finale. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
