Edgewood College splits with no. 12 Benedictine in NACC battle

VERONA – It was a battle of the Eagles at a humid and windy Stampfl Field Saturday. Edgewood College hosted Benedictine, ranked no. 12 in the latest D3baseball.com poll, in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) showdown. Benedictine (25-8, 14-6 NACC) rallied late to win a 14-5 game one off of Edgewood College (18-17, 12-8), but the hosts got the last laugh in an 8-3 final in game two.
 
GAME ONE: NO. 12 BENEDICTINE 14, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 5 (EIGHT INNINGS)
- Benedictine struck first in the first, but both teams were quiet for the next three innings. Ryan Mixey had a strong start, going 5.2 IP with nine strikeouts.
 
- After evening the game with an error by Benedictine, the Edgewood College offense got to work in the fifth. A Kyle Sagan single to left center plated one, before a Xavier Schreiber three-run home run to left center put the hosts ahead 5-1.
 
- A pair of home runs by Benedictine in the sixth close the gap to 5-4, before a two-out double in the seventh tied the game. After Edgewood College went scoreless in the seventh, Benedictine's offense found another gear in the eighth. They plated nine runs in the inning and shut down the Edgewood College bats in the bottom of the frame for the victory.
 
- Brooks Kalscheur hit 2-for-3 on the day with a double. Schreiber swung 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run.
 
- Jackson Bahn pitched well, fanning eight Edgewood College batters. Nick Shelton earned the victory in a strong relief outing for the visitors.
 
GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 8, NO. 12 BENEDICTINE 3
- After a scoreless first, Edgewood College's offense got on the board first with another home run from Schreiber to right center, plating a pair.
 
- A single up the middle earned a run for Benedictine in the third. Edgewood College answered with a Kyle Prindle double to right center and a Sagan double to left center for a 4-1 lead after three.
 
- A Jacob Carney moonshot to right field in the fourth and a Sagan home run to right field in the fifth left things at 7-1 Edgewood College after five. Prindle singled in a run to right field in the sixth.
 
- Benedictine would get two runs in the seventh, but Edgewood College clamped down on the threat for the victory.
   
- Prindle hit 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and two runs. Sagan hit 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two walks.
 
- Schreiber, Carney, and Dominic Lee each had a pair of hits. Kalscheur hit a double, while Connor Goodwin grabbed a stolen base.
 
- Aidan Williams tossed a complete game gem. He recorded six strikeouts and only two walks in a dominant performance.


BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The three home runs in game two matched Edgewood College's season high as a team.
 
- The victory in game two snapped a 13-game losing streak against Benedictine.
 
UP NEXT
Edgewood College will continue their gauntlet of nationally ranked foes Tuesday. They will take on Aurora in a NACC battle at Stampfl Field for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Verona, Wis.
