BELOIT, WIS. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad entered their second conference doubleheader in as many days Thursday. They faced off with the Rockford Regents in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action. The Eagles (9-7, 3-1 NACC) fell short in a 4-3 final in game one before the bats came alive in game two for a 11-7 victory to split the doubleheader against the Regents (6-12, 2-2).
GAME ONE: ROCKFORD 4, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 3
- The Regents hit the ground running in the bottom of the first. A leadoff home run to right field put them on the board. A bases-loaded single through the right side would plate another. A throwing error would prove to be costly for the Eagles, allowing two unearned runs to cross home.
- Neither offense would muster much for the next four innings, as Nate Burdin clamped down on the Edgewood College lineup while
Aidan Williams settled in and shut down Rockford's.
- The Eagles came to life in the sixth. A single up the middle from
Dominic Lee turned a leadoff triple from
Ryan Ambrosy into a run. Mistakes by the Regents would keep the runners moving around the bases and allowed another run to score, then a fielder's choice from
Kyle Prindle would tally another to leave Edgewood College within striking distance 4-3.
- A pair of Williams strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth kept the Eagles close as they headed into the top of the seventh. The Regents defense came through for the hosts as they sealed the victory with a double play.
-
Kyle Sagan hit 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.
- Williams pitched well in the loss, tossing six innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs.
- Burdin earned the victory and Will Hissong the save for Rockford.
- Jared Herzog was effective at the plate. He hit 3-for-3 with a home run and a double.
GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 11, ROCKFORD 7
- After a quiet first two innings, the Eagles hit the board first in the third. Sagan doubled to right center to start things off.
Xavier Schreiber singled up the middle to record another RBI before a wild pitch brought him home.
Carson Richter rounded out the scoring with an RBI groundout to second base.
- Mistakes by the Regents' catcher would score the first of three for the visitors in the top of the fourth. Prindle continued his strong season with a two-RBI single through the left side. A sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the fourth by Rockford would leave things at 7-1 after four.
- The Regents made progress in the fifth inning. A double to right field tallied a run. A ground out to the shortstop sent home another, and a double to right center cut the Edgewood College lead to 7-4.
- Ambrosy continued his solid day with a single to center field plating a run in the top of the seventh. Rockford would even out the gain in the eighth with a fielder's choice, but the Eagles would tack on insurance runs in the ninth.
Hayden Hellenbrand singled through the left side for an RBI. An error by the pitcher would keep the inning going and allow another run to cross home, while Schreiber took a hit by pitch to plate one more for an 11-5 advantage.
- Rockford would add on two more with an RBI double a single to right field in the bottom of the ninth, but it would not be enough to overcome the Edgewood College offense.
- Sagan and Prindle each had three-hit performances with a pair of RBIs. Sagan added two walks, a double, and a stolen base.
- Schreiber earned a pair of RBIs and Tolliver three walks.
-
Gavin Vrana earned the victory, striking out six in eight innings of work.
- Kadin Bergstrom hit three-for-five with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
