Kalafut grabs another record, Eagles split with Green Knights

DE PERE, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad continued their marathon of a week Wednesday. They battled in more Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action with a pair of games at the St. Norbert Green Knights. After falling just short in a 9-8 game one, the Eagles (19-16, 11-9 NACC) found themselves back in the win column with a 6-3 victory over the Green Knights (11-25, 5-15) in game two.

GAME ONE: ST. NORBERT 9, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 8
- The first tilt found the two squads exchanging blows back and forth. After the Green Knights scored two off a pair of singles in the top of the second, the Eagles claimed the lead in the third inning. A Kyle Prindle walk, a Dylan Carrington sacrifice fly to right field, and a wild pitch left them with a 3-2 lead after two and a half.

- St. Norbert replied with a triple and a single to take a 4-3 lead after three. The two teams tied things up after five, with a Carrington single and a Cooper Holewinski sacrifice bunt putting two home for Edgewood College, and a single driving in a run for the Green Knights.

- After a Kyle Sagan sacrifice fly to right field scored one in the top of the sixth, the bottom of the sixth and seventh proved to be crucial for St. Norbert. A trio of singles scored three in the sixth, while a sacrifice fly allowed the Green Knights to take advantage of Eagles mistakes to send in an unearned run.

- Sagan scored two with a home run in the eighth, but the Edgewood College offense sputtered in the ninth to start the doubleheader with a loss.

- Carson Richter was the only Eagle bat with multiple hits in game one. Caden Uhlenbrauck was a force for St. Norbert, hitting four-of-five with three RBIs and a run.

- Three Eagles pitchers combined for nine strikeouts in the loss. Miles Freidman earned the victory and Luke Steebs the save for the hosts.

GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 6, ST. NORBERT 3
- The Eagles landed the first blows in the second tilt. A Prindle sacrifice fly tallied one in the third, while a Brooks Kalscheur double sent in one, while a wild pitch sent Kalscheur home to leave Edgewood College up 3-0.

-Sagan singled in a run in the top of the sixth. The Green Knights got going in the sixth with a single and a grounder putting them on the board at 4-2. The Eagles got into a jam in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out, but Connor Dunfee was effective, holding St. Norbert to a lone sacrifice fly after entering the game.

- Brevin Brisack tacked on a pair of insurance runs with a double in the ninth. The Green Knights sent up only seven batters in the last two innings to drop the doubleheader.

- Kalafut stepped up on the pitcher's mound in a big way during a long week. He tossed five innings of scoreless ball with one walk and three hits allowed. Leo Stone tallied the save in the win.

- Brisack had one of the better games of his young career, hitting four-of-five with a pair of RBIs. Sagan hit three-of-five, while Kalafut added in two hits to assist his pitching.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- With his walk in game one, Kalafut now also owns the single-season walks record. He sits at 34 walks, surpassing former teammate and current coach Alex Prindle's mark of 33 set in 2022.

- St. Norbert holds a 9-4 series lead after yet another split doubleheader.

- The victory in the second game snapped a six-game losing streak.
