PEORIA, Ill. – The Edgewood College Eagles softball squad wrapped up their stay at the MMU Collegiate Slugger Series Friday morning. They played against the Loras Duhawks and the UW-Platteville Pioneers. The Eagles (3-3) took advantage of errors to down the Duhawks (1-2) in 5-2 fashion, while the Pioneers (3-0) scraped by with a 3-1 victory over Edgewood College.
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 5, LORAS 2
- Neither team managed much in the early going, with a home run down the left field line from Loras being the only run on the board until the fourth inning.
- The errors started in the top of the fourth inning, a wild pitch bringing in a Duhawk runner from third with a pair of outs. The bottom of the fourth is when the dam finally broke. A walk and a single gave the Eagles runners on first and second with no outs, before a throwing error let
Kya Loffswold reach safely and bring in their first run. A hit by pitch loaded the bases for
Gracie Halfman to walk in a run, followed by an
Olivia Hebert single to tack on another to take the lead
- A throwing error on a fielder's choice helped Edgewood College tack on a pair of insurance runs to close out the five-run fourth. Neither team would manage much for the rest of the game, with the Eagles cruising to their second-straight win.
-
Gaby Slater threw a complete game in the victory, allowing only two earned runs and tossing four strikeouts.
-
Camden Shepherd, Hebert, and
Jenna Sanchez combined for Edgewood College's three hits, with Shepherd adding on a base on balls.
GAME TWO: UW-PLATTEVILLE 3, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 1
- The start of the game was quiet once again, with the Eagles going three up and three down in their first two innings.
- The Pioneers pieced together their three runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. A single punched home the first tally of the game in the third inning, while a fielder's choice with the bases loaded added another in the fourth. An error kept the fifth inning going long enough for UW-Platteville to tack on their final run of the morning.
- Edgewood College got on the board in the sixth inning with a Loffswold double to right field. The seventh seemed promising for a comeback as an error and a hit by pitch gave them runners on first and second with an out, but a fielder's choice followed out by a ground-out dashed their hopes.
- Six Eagles recorded hits on the afternoon with Hebert going two-of-four at the plate.
Grace Pustina and
Elizabeth Malarski combined to allow only three runs in seven innings in the loss.
- Roughen was effective on the mound and at the plate for the Pioneers, fanning six Edgewood College batters while hitting two-of-three at the plate and earning the victory on the mound. Calli Storms accounted for one run while batting in another.
