Game Recap: Softball |

Eagles split pair of walkoffs to wrap up The Spring Game

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Edgewood College Eagles softball squad wrapped up their stay at The Spring Games Thursday afternoon. They battled with the Simpson Storm and the Western New England Golden Bears. The Eagles (10-6) won 5-4 on a walk off against the Storm (10-4), before dropping in an extra innings thriller to the Golden Bears (8-2) in 5-4 fashion.

GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 5, SIMPSON 4
- The Eagles struck first with small ball. A Jenna Sanchez single to left center started the scoring, followed by an Elizabeth Malarski single down the left field line to leave Edgewood College up 2-0 after one.

- The bats were relatively quiet in the next three innings of play, the only run being a Storm stealing home in the third.

- The offenses came to life in the fifth frame. A two-run single to left field made it 3-2 Simpson after their half of the inning. The Eagles grabbed the lead back in the fifth, a Sanchez sacrifice fly tying the game before a Grace Ott single to left made it 4-3.

- A single to right in the sixth inning left things a 4-4 after six. Edgewood College shut down the Storm with runners on first and second with a lone out in the top of the seventh to set up a walk-off opportunity. Errors and hits allowed the Eagles to load the bases for a Natalie Fields single to left field to walk off the Edgewood College victory.

- Olivia Hebert reached base three times, hitting two-of-three with a walk and accounting for two runs. Sanchez and Malarski both had a pair of hits, with Sanchez batting in two.

- Gaby Slater threw two innings of shutout ball to record the victory.

GAME TWO: WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 5, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 4 (8 INNINGS)
- The Golden Bears opened the scoring with an RBI single to the shortstop. Kya Loffswold tied the game up with a double to center field in the third.

- Western New England sent two runs across home in the fifth. A bases-loaded walk followed by a fielder's choice and a throwing error made it 3-1 Golden Bears.

- The Eagles came through with runs when they badly needed them in the seventh. An Alyse Maurer double to left field brought home run number two, while Ott reached first on an error to send home Maurer to force extras.

- A sacrifice fly to right field by Chloe McLaughlin put Edgewood College up 4-3 after the top of the eighth. The Golden Bears came through in the clutch this time to end the game. A single to right field followed by a fielder's choice sent Western New England home with a walkoff win.

- Loffswold hit two-of-four with an RBI in the loss. Hebert reached base twice and crossed home both times.

- Grace Pustina and Slater combined to throw seven and a third innings while allowing only one earned run.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles are now 5-2 in one-run games this season.

- Slater threw five innings and allowed no earned runs across both games on the day.

- Edgewood College holds the series lead 3-1 over Western New England while the Storm lead their series 5-2.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles take two weeks off before opening their Northern Collegiate Athletic Conference (NACC) slate with a doubleheader at Concordia Wisconsin. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 31. Edgewood College holds the series lead 36-34, but the Falcons have won nine straight.
