MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles men's basketball squad entered their first of three must-win games in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play Saturday. They traveled to face the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. The Eagles (6-17, 6-9 NACC) played a strong first half, but the Falcons (7-15, 4-10) got the last laugh with a pair of free throws with four seconds left to take home a 78-77 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Concordia Wisconsin jumped ahead early with five points in the first :38 of play. Edgewood College replied with a 19-2 bombardment from all parts of the floor for most of the first 10 minutes of play, leapfrogging the Falcons for a 19-7 lead.
- The next eight minutes would be Concordia Wisconsin minutes as they held onto a 22-13 advantage, a three-pointer at 2:32 cutting the lead down to just 32-29. The Eagles would finish the half with momentum, a 7-3 rally giving themselves breathing room with a 39-32 tally at the half.
- The Eagles took advantage of Concordia Wisconsin turnovers in the first half, scoring 10 points to the Falcons none. Rebounds and second chance points were also strong, with Edgewood College grabbing six offensive boards for eight second chance tallies.
- The opening minutes of the second frame were all Eagles as they started the half on a 7-2 run. They would lead by as many as 13 at multiple points in the first ten minutes. A pair of threes from
Trey Traeder would put them ahead 61-51 with 10:22 left.
- Concordia Wisconsin refused to go away and steadily chipped away at the Edgewood College lead with a 14-7 rally as the Eagles went cold from beyond the arc. The Falcons' big break came at 1:06 as a layup and one gave them their first lead since the opening minutes of the game. Edgewood College would sink a pair of free throws, but a crucial Eagles foul with :04 left would give Concordia Wisconsin a one point lead back. A last-ditch effort fell short as the Falcons took home a victory on their Senior Day.
- The Eagles were led by
Jake Schroeckenthaler, who posted his 13th double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds.
Adam Baierl, Traeder, and
Caden Nelson also finished with double-digit points. Baierl and Traeder each netted 12 points, while Nelson continued to be the everyman with 10 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Drew Houtakker also had a strong showing with 11 rebounds and three steals.
- Freeman Jackson finished with a double-double for Concordia Wisconsin, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jared Jurss made the game-winning free throws and earned 21 points.
- The Falcons got hot in the second half with a 51.43 (18-of-35) shooting percentage. They attacked the paint more effectively a well, outscoring Edgewood College 34-20 in the last 20 minutes.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The loss was the second in a row for the Eagles.
- The loss also snapped a two-game winning streak against Concordia Wisconsin. Edgewood College holds a 40-37 lead in the series dating back to 1987-88.
UP NEXT
The Eagles look to bounce back from a pair of tough losses as they head to Aurora, Ill. Tuesday evening. They play the Aurora Spartans with first tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Edgewood College has lost eight in a row to the Spartans including a one-point loss earlier this year. Aurora holds a 21-6 series lead since the 2006-07 season.
