DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Edgewood College women's basketball team opened their 2023-24 campaign at the Loras College Tipoff Classic on Friday evening. The Eagles faced No. 19 Loras College in their first big test, falling by a score of 79-64. Vivian Guerrero picked up right where she left off, leading the Eagles with a double-double on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (0-1) hung tough with ranked Loras College (1-0) scoring in double-figures in all four quarters and only trailing by six points (36-30) at halftime. The Eagles opened their first 10 minutes of action in the 2023-24 season with solid shooting. They recorded a 46.15 shooting percentage (6-of-13) from the floor and 75 percent (6-of-8) from the charity stripe, to total 19 points and trail Loras by just three. Vivian Guerrero came out hot for the Eagles, scoring seven points in the first quarter. She was joined by newcomer Moli Haak, who added four points, her first as an Eagle.
- The Eagles continued to hold steady with the Duhawks through the second quarter, scoring 13 points.
- Coming out of halftime, the Edgewood College defense held Loras to their lowest shooting percentage of the night, 26.32 (5-of-19) percent from the floor. Loras made up from the free point line, scoring 5-of-8 and totaling 16 points. A three point make from Lexi Beier gave the Duhawks a 54-44 lead going into the final quarter.
- Edgewood College shot their best in the final quarter, connecting on 8-of-12 from the floor, good for 66.67 percent. The Eagles 20 points wasn't enough to make up the difference, as Loras tacked on 25 points. The Duhawks took their largest lead of the contest at 17 points with 1:55 remaining in the contest.
- Guerrero tied her career-best 23 points and tacked on 15 rebounds for a double-double. Kenzie Senffner and Kallie Norby each recorded double-digit points, with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jayden Nortier collected five points and five rebounds in her first contest for the Eagles.
- Madison Fleckenstein (19 points), Emerson Whittenbaugh (14 points) and Madison Haslow (12 points) each scored in double-digits for the Duhawks. Sami Martin scored nine points and added 10 rebounds. Silvana Scarsella dished out a game-high six assists.
