VERONA, Wis. – Behind a solid pitching performance from Nick Manthei, the Edgewood College Baseball team defeated UW-Platteville in non-conference action on Wednesday. Manthei struck out 12 batters and allowed only three runs in a 7-4 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (10-6) had their biggest inning of the night from the very beginning, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The first run came as a result of a walk from Joseph Kalafut, as Connor Goodwin crossed the plate after taking advantage of miscues from the Pioneers early in the inning. Kyle Semrad would plate Adam Cairo from third base on a sacrifice fly to left field. Kyle Sagan gave the Eagles their third run just a batter later, scoring on a single to right field off the bat of Carson Richter.
- The Eagles would tack on two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an error from the UW-Platteville (4-11) defense. Edgewood College would tack on their seventh and final run in the bottom of the seventh frame. Cairo notched his second hit of the game, scoring Goodwin from second base.
- Manthei picked up the win on the mound, allowing just three runs in six innings of work. The freshman also notched a career-high 12 strikeouts in the victory. The Eagles also used Anthony Schatz, who picked up his first two strikeouts as an Eagle through two innings of work. Conner Dunfee earns the save, striking out two and allowing only one hit in the final inning. Most impressively, the Eagles pitching staff did not record a walk in the victory.
- UW-Platteville plated a couple of runs in the sixth to bring the score to 5-2. Schatz entered in the top of the seventh inning and worked out of a jam, forcing double play and ending the top of the frame with a big strikeout to keep the Eagles in front 6-4.
- Edgewood College finished the game with nine hits, as four Eagles notched two hits. Carson Richter finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Adam Cairo finished 2-for-3 with a key RBI and two runs scored. Goodwin and Jacob Slonim each went 2-for-5, with Goodwin notching two runs.
- Ben Espinoza paced the Pioneers with three hits from the leadoff spot.
