TUCSON, Arizona – Jacob Slonim belted a pair of three-run home runs to lead the Edgewood College Baseball team to a 16-8 win over Macalester in the Eagles spring break opener on Sunday. The Eagles bats adjusted well to the warm weather, which included a seven-run fourth inning in the convincing win over the Scots.
EAGLES 16, SCOTS 8
- Trailing 3-2 entering the top of the fourth, Edgewood College (3-4) erupted for seven runs.
Connor Goodwin started the party with a two-RBI single, while
Joseph Kalafut added an RBI single in the frame. Slonim put an exclamation point on the big inning with his first three-run blast of the game, plating Kalafut and
Kyle Sagan and giving the Eagles a 9-3 lead.
- The Scots (0-3) cut their deficit in half with a three-run fifth inning but Edgewood College responded with four runs in the top of the sixth. Slonim launched his second three-run jack of the game, again plating Kalafut and Sagan, in the four-run sixth.
- Edgewood College would continue its strong performance at the plate by adding insurance runs in the eight and ninth innings. Goodwin delivered his third RBI of the day in the ninth, and the Eagles took advantage of some erratic pitching from the Scots in the ninth inning with two more runs. Macalester scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but never truly threatened the Eagles big lead.
- Edgewood College finished the game with 11 hits and 16 runs. Slonim was the top performer with his two home runs, but the Eagles had plenty of other contributors in the win. Goodwin drove in three from his leadoff spot and Sagan, Kalafut, and Slonim all scored three times. Sagan finished 2-for-4 and Kalfut went 3-for-4 with both players adding doubles.
Kyle Semrad also doubled for the Eagles.
- The Eagles used four pitchers with
Nick Manthei getting the start and delivering four innings.
Garrett Redner will get the win for the Eagles after throwing a scoreless relief inning.
Leo Stone delivered three scoreless frames with four strikeouts, whole Kalafut pitched the ninth for the Eagles, allowing two unearned runs.
- Macalester outhit Edgewood College on Sunday, but the Eagles were better in the field, committing just one error compared to six for the Scots.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Slonim set the Eagles single season home run record last year with 10 and is closing in on the career record after his two jacks on Sunday. He now has 12 career home runs and Tim Barry (2009-10) is the Eagles career leader with 15. Slonim has already moved into a tie for second all-time with Travis Krahn (2001-14).
