RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Edgewood College Men's Basketball team saw its 2021-22 season come to an end with a 94-81 loss at top-seeded Concordia University Chicago in the NACC Tournament quarterfinal round on Wednesday night.
COUGARS 94, EAGLES 81
- The Eagles (11-14) fell victim to a fast start from the Cougars (15-9) which they couldn't overcome. Concordia Chicago scored the game's first 10 points and built a 30-7 lead with 12:28 left in the first half. The lead grew to a game-high 24 points with 10:14 left before Edgewood College starting chipping away.
- Concordia Chicago couldn't miss in the opening stretch, making 8-of-9 from 3-point range during the 30-7 run.
- The Eagles cut that deficit in half by halftime as they trailed 46-34. They would only get within single digits once in the second half, a 79-70 Concordia Chicago lead with 5:17 remaining, as the lead hovered around 11-13 points for much of the final 20 minutes.
- Four Eagles combined for 80 of the team's 81 points on Wednesday, led by
Jake Schroeckenthaler and his 27 points. He shot 12-of-21 from the line and added eight rebounds and two steals.
Eli Hartjes closed an outstanding senior season with 23 points and nine rebounds, while
Avery Lyons and
Adam Baierl each tallied 15 points.
- Lyons closed his senior season with outstanding play down the stretch run and Wednesday night was no different. After posting a career-best 14 assists in Saturday's NACC Tournament win over Rockford, he added 12 assists on Wednesday night. He also made 3-of-7 from 3-point range, all three of those in the first half to keep the Eagles within reach.
- The Cougars eventually cooled down after their scorching start from 3-point range, but they still finished the game 13-of-24 from distance (54.2 percent), while shooting 55.6 percent (35-for-63) from the floor. The Cougars shot their worst from the free throw line, making just 11-of-21 (52.4 percent). The Eagles meanwhile had totals of 41.1 percent (30-for-73) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-for-19) from deep, and 78.9 percent (15-for-19) from the line.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The game ends the careers of three outstanding student-athletes for the Eagles: Hartjes, Lyons, and
Anthony Janega Jr. Thank you to those three for all they did for the Eagles Men's Basketball program.
- The win was the second NACC Tournament in program history for Concordia Chicago, the other coming on the road at Edgewood College exactly 12 years to the date. CUC won that game 71-60 in Madison.
