LISLE, Ill. – The Edgewood College Women's Basketball team used a strong third quarter to build a sizeable lead, before holding on for a 59-55 win over Benedictine University Tuesday evening. Eden Bonser led the way with a career-high scoring effort, while Diamond Pikulyk was the second Edgewood College player to score in double-figures in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (2-10, 2-3 NACC) led 18-16 after one quarter before trailing Benedictine by nine (31-22) going into halftime. Edgewood College would put a stop to the Benedictine offense in the third quarter, outscoring the rival Eagles 22-6 and taking a 7-point lead into the final 10 minutes of action.
- The Edgewood College offense and defense worked in sync during the third period, as the Eagles managed 50 percent shooting from the floor and held the Benedictine offense to just 15.79 percent shooting. Free throws were big part of the Edgewood College turnaround, as they did not allow Benedictine a trip to the line through the 10 minutes, and connected on 7-of-11 from the charity stripe.
- Benedictine (6-8, 4-3 NACC) would make things interesting in the final three minutes, getting as close as four points in the final seconds. Beneditine cut the Edgewood College lead to 59-52 with 1:38 left on the clock, but Edgewood College held on in the end.
- Edgewood College scored 30 points in the paint on Tuesday, but also made four key shots from 3-point range in the win. Bonser included a 2-for-2 performance from long range, while also making 6-of-10 overall and pulling down seven rebounds for Edgewood College. Pikulyk was also key offensively in the victory, scoring 11 points and pulling down eight rebounds.
- Vivan Guerero led Edgewood College in pulling down nine rebounds and recording two blocks. Emma Klein and Mady Pahl also recorded six rebounds each.
- Klein added nine points and dished out five assists. Bonser and Kenzie Senffner each added three assists.
THE OPPOSITION
- Brilan McCory and Claire Gibler each scored 14 points to lead Benedictine. Alex Fanning added a 10-point, 10 rebound double-double. Hanna Piro also pulled down 10 rebounds, while dishing out a team-high four assists.
UP NEXT
- Edgewood College will look to extend their win streak to three against Alverno College on Saturday. Action is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. from the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
