WHEATON, Ill. – The Edgewood College women's tennis team chose a stiff test to open their 2018-19 campaign in regional power Wheaton College. The Eagles came away on the short end of a 9-0 loss, but likely gained valuable experience playing the Thunder on their home court.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles fell behind 3-0 after doubles play, losing 8-3 at both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions.
- Alicia Picard came the closest to pulling out a win for Edgewood College (0-1). At No. 3 singles, Picard bounced back from a rough first set to force a match tiebreaker, before falling to Clare Browning 6-0, 4-6, 10-3.
- Freshman Kai Heineman made a strong debut for the Eagles falling in two close sets to Wheaton's Claire Dibble 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College women's tennis lost their season opener for the second straight year. The Eagles last won a season opener in 2016, defeating Monmouth College 8-1 on the road. Current Eagles Alyssa Carew, Sydney Verbauwhede, Picard, Marissa Wilson, Jaclyn Swift and Haley Brooks were all part of that victory.
