CHICAGO – After eight days without a game because of wintery April weather, the Edgewood College baseball team was eager to step back onto the field. However, the University of Chicago racked up 15 runs on 15 hits against the Eagles to claim a 15-5 non-conference victory.
Edgewood College (6-15) and University of Chicago (16-7) combined to use 18 pitchers in a planned staff day for both teams. The Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Bryan Sternig scored on a wild pitch, and Nick Cheaney drove in Ryan Fields with a double, but that would be the Eagles last lead. The Maroons tallied four times in the bottom of the first inning to capture the lead.
The Eagles trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the top of the third when Cheaney drove in Alex Fowler with a ground out. Fowler had reached on a leadoff double. Everything turned sour for the Eagles in the bottom of the inning as the University of Chicago scored seven runs on five hits to take a commanding 11-3 lead. Garrett Bogucki and Bryan Sternig would add RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings to close out Edgewood College's scoring.
Sternig reached base four times in the game, going 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a stolen base. Cheaney went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Alex Fowler had a double and a stolen base, and Sam McGill added a double as well. The Eagles used 10 pitchers in the game, in an effort to keep arms fresh for four NACC games scheduled this weekend. Adam Eck started and took the loss, striking out three batters.
Edgewood College will return to Illinois on Saturday for a conference doubleheader with Rockford University. On Sunday, the Eagles will host MSOE.
