Coast Guard's big sixth inning puts away Eagles

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Just when the Edgewood College baseball team had gotten back into their game with the Coast Guard Academy, the Bears closed the door. Coast Guard scored four runs in the sixth inning, immediately after the Eagles had scored three to tie the game, and held on for an 8-4 victory at Terry Park.

After Coast Guard (5-1) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Eagles responded in the third. Ryan Fields stroked a one-out triple to center field, and scored one batter later on Alex Fowler's RBI single. However, the Bears picked up a run in the fourth and Jon Pressley hit a two-run home run in the fifth for a 4-1 Coast Guard lead.

Edgewood College (2-4) knotted the game up in the top of the sixth inning. The Eagles put runners on first and third after a Bryan Sternig single and a stolen base, and a hit by pitch for Callen Gavic. Peter Perales laid down a perfect squeeze bunt single, scoring Sternig from third to cut the lead to 4-2. Folowing a Josh Ottum sacrifice, Jeff Tucker singled to center to score both Gavic and Perales and tie the contest at 4-4.

The Bears, though, opened the bottom of the sixth with three singles and an Eagle error to spark a decisive four-run inning. The Eagles went down in order in each of the final three innings against two difference Coast Guard pitchers.

Fowler finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate including a double and an RBI. Perales was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Will Mossa received his first collegiate start pitching 4.2 innings, and allowing four runs with one strikeout. Ryan Howell was the Eagles' first pitcher out of the bullpen and took the loss falling to 0-1 on the season.

Edgewood College will continue their play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday with a doubleheader against Newbury College. Live stats and potentially live video can be found at EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
