Eagles season closes with draw to Sabres

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team battled till the end in a thrilling 2-2 tie with Marian University. The Eagles closed out their 2018 season on Wednesday night at Breese Stevens Field with a record of 3-12-2.

The Eagles and Marian University (3-13-2, 2-8-1 NACC) remained scoreless at halftime. The Sabres outshot the Eagles 11-8 in the first half, but ultimately the six saves from Eagle goalkeeper Grace Wildeboer kept things even on both sides of the pitch. An impressive Eagle defense, headlined by Alisha Nolden, Maddy Solder, and Sarah Deininger kept things close, providing a foundation for many strong offensive opportunities throughout competition.

Edgewood College came out of the half determined to make things interesting. Mari Hubanks struck first for the Eagles in the 54th minute. The senior made a run down the right half of the field, whizzing the ball past the Sabres goalkeeper Amy Birner for her fifth goal of the season. Marian struck back quickly, scoring just 10 minutes later. Karissa Preston netted her second goal of the season for the Sabres off a free kick.

The Eagles responded quickly, as Carolyn Evers scored in the 64th minute off a pass from Lauren Clark. The freshman's first goal as an Eagle came from five yards out off the left post. Both teams battled back and forth, but Marian would score once more in the second half. Alexis Peterson scored her eighth goal of the season to tie things up in the 74th minute.

In overtime Edgewood College came through with an impressive defensive performance, allowing the Eagle offense to outshoot the Sabres 5-3 through both overtime periods. Ultimately the score would remain even at two, as the Eagles and Sabres would settle for a draw.

Overall, Marian University outshot Edgewood College 26-19. Hubanks led the Eagles with six shots, while fellow senior Mady Warda finished with five shots. Sophomore goalkeeper, Wildeboer recorded an impressive 11 saves for the match.
