MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College men's soccer only scored one goal in their season opener, but displayed an offensive punch that's been lacking the last in the last couple of seasons. Garrett Lee scored the game's only goal as the Eagles began the 2017 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Beloit College at Goodman Pitch-East.
It took 12 minutes before either team registered a shot, but Lee made the first shot of the game count. Senior Henry Simon found open space down the center of the field and slotted a ball into the right side of the penalty area for a streaking Lee. Lee's blast beat Beloit College (0-1) goalkeeper Jere Bauer over his left shoulder for a 1-0 lead.
Edgewood College (1-0) seemed to gain confidence from the score and kept the pressure on the Buccaneers. The Eagles nearly made added a second goal in the 20th minute when Zander Rothering got on the end of a cross, but his one-time shot went wide. In the 31st minute freshman Jordan Stark made a great turn in the box. His shot was saved by Bauer, and Nicholas Bilodeau's rebound attempt sailed high. The Eagles outshot the Buccaneers 9-4 in the first half.
Simon nearly netted a goal of his own with a brilliant diving header in the 57th minutes, but his effort caromed off the crossbar. The Eagles defense, led by freshman goalkeeper Dan Dombrowski and senior defender Zachary Greenwood-Schaftary limited Beloit to just one shot in the second half. Dombrowski picked up his first career shutout in his first collegiate start, making three saves.
Edgewood College outshot Beloit College 21-5, led by Simon with five shots. Lee put three of his four shots on net, including the goal, the 17th of his career.
Edgewood College will be home again at Goodman Pitch-East on Tuesday, for a date with Olivet College. Kickoff on September 5 is 7:00 p.m.
