RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Edgewood College baseball team battled NACC preseason favorite Concordia University Chicago on Sunday, but the Eagles struggled to restrain the Cougars offense in a doubleheader sweep. The Eagles fell to CUC 17-7 in game one, before dropping a 7-5 decision in the day's second game.
Edgewood College (12-8, 4-4 NACC) fell behind 9-0 after three innings but bounced back for four runs in the fourth inning. Tim Nunn smoked a double down the left field line to score two, and Jeff Tucker followed with an RBI single. Three batters later Alex Fowler hit his first career triple to cut the Cougars' lead to 9-4. In the fifth, Nick Lehner followed Danny Appino's leadoff triple with a home run to left center field to bring the Eagles within 10-6, but that was as close as they would get. Tucker launched a solo home run in the top of the eighth to close out the Eagles' scoring.
Lehner finished the game with three hits, including his two-run homer. Nunn and Tucker each had two hits and two runs batted in. Jeff Wolf lasted just 2.2 innings as the starter and was relieved by AJ Weedon and Ryan Howell. The Eagles totaled 11 hits for the first game.
Steve Gavin started for Edgewood College in game two, and despite giving up two runs in the first, gave the Eagles eight solid innings in a complete game loss. Edgewood College got on the board in the fifth when Jonathan Roehler brought home Fowler with a sacrifice fly shortly after Fowler's leadoff double.
The Cougars had expanded their lead to 6-1 when the Eagles put the pressure on in the seventh inning. Appino doubled to center field to bring home Patrick Wardlaw who had reached on his first collegiate base hit. That's when Lehner stepped in again with a three-run blast to center field for his fourth home run of the season and brought the Eagles within 6-5. Concordia University Chicago (16-9, 8-0 NACC) added an insurance run in the seventh and limited the Eagles to only a Nunn single in the eighth and ninth inning to secure the win.
Roehler and Nunn each had two hits to lead the offense for Edgewood College. Lehner had a team-high three RBIs, all coming on his seventh inning home run. Appino had a double and a stolen base.
Edgewood College will return home and try to shake off this current four-game losing streak. The Eagles will welcome Maranatha Baptist to Stampfl Field for a pair of seven-inning games on Thursday. First pitch will be at 4:00 p.m. in Verona.
