Eagles' bats batter Muskies for sweep

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The weather was cold, but the Edgewood College bats were hot in the Eagles' sweep over Lakeland University on Monday afternoon. The Eagles pounded the Muskies with 25 runs and 32 hits in 13-2 and 12-2 victories to even their NACC record at 6-6. Danny Appino earned a save in the second game to become Edgewood College's career saves leader.

After six straight NACC losses, Monday's outburst might be just what the Eagles need. In game one, Edgewood College (16-10, 6-6 NACC) put the first eight runs of the game on the board to take control early. After Nick Lehner's RBI double in the first inning, the Eagles scored six runs in the second. Garrett Bogucki contributed a two-run single, while Appino and Jonathan Roehler each had an RBI single in the inning. Bogucki added another RBI single in the fourth inning to give the Eagles an 8-0 lead.

Lakeland University (10-16, 2-8 NACC) scored runs in the fifth and eighth innings, but the Eagles kept adding insurance runs to keep their cushion. Callen Gavic had a sacrifice fly in the eighth, while Nick Cheaney had a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth.

On the mound, Blake Bieri kept the Muskies off balance. Bieri allowed just two hits through the first five innings and left the game after seven innings with one earned run allowed and eight strikeouts. Bieri improved his record to 4-2 on the season. Roehler and Bogucki each had three hits, including a double, with Roehler swiping two bases and Bogucki contributing three runs batted in. Jeff Tucker went 2-for-2, reached base five times and stole two bases. Brodie Engel also had two hits for the Eagles.

Edgewood College had 10 hits in the first four innings of game two, but found themselves tied 2-2 heading into the fifth inning. But in the fifth, a Lakeland error opened the door and Tim Nunn made the Muskies pay with a two-run triple to right field, scoring Bogucki and Tucker. Paul Cappetta followed with a double to score Nunn, and Appino brought home Cappetta with a base hit to give the Eagles a 6-2 lead.

Starting pitcher Jeff Wolf was solid on the mound, allowing two runs and striking out seven before finding trouble in the eighth inning. The Muskies loaded the bases with two outs, so the Eagles turned to Appino to get them out of a jam. Appino coaxed a ground ball out of Drew Richard to escape the threat. The Eagles padded their lead with 2-run singles from Casey Willis and Nunn in the ninth, and Appino worked a 1-2-3 inning to end the game. The save was Appino's fifth this season and sixth of his career, which breaks the Edgewood College all-time saves lead which was held jointly by six different Eagles.

Cappetta led all hitters by going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Nunn was 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. Appino had three hits including a double and a stolen base. Roehler and Tucker each had two hits and two stolen bases, while Bogucki also went 2-for-4.

At the end of the day's action, Edgewood College finds themselves tied for fifth place in the NACC. The Eagles next action comes Saturday at Stampfl Field in a non-conference doubleheader against Illinois Tech. The Eagles and Scarlet Hawks begin a 5:00 p.m.
