FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Edgewood College baseball team had a great opportunity to knock off one of the Central region's hottest teams, but an unearned run in the 11th inning gave Augustana College (Ill.) a 5-4 victory on Friday. The loss spoiled an outstanding 10-inning pitching performance by Steve Gavin in the Eagles second-to-last game in Florida.
Augustana College (10-1) scored once in the first inning for a quick 1-0 lead, but the Eagles responded immediately in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, the Vikings failed to convert the back half of a double play on Alex Fowler's ground ball, throwing the ball away which allowed both Nick Lehner and Callen Gavic to score for a 2-1 Eagles lead.
Gavin escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, but couldn't get out of the fifth without Augustana regaining a 3-2 lead. In the seventh, Jonathan Roehler came through with a two-run, two-out singles to score Nik Visone and Fowler and put Edgewood College (6-2) back on top 4-3. The Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly. Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth, forcing the game to extra innings.
Gavin departed the game after 10 innings, having allowed three earned runs on eight hits and striking out four batters. Alex Meister entered in relief, but issued a walk to Augustana's Tyler Nunez. After Nunez stole second base, Carter Amundsen laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the Eagles threw errantly to first base, allowing Nunez to score the winning run.
The Eagles had seven different players with one hit apiece. Roehler had his team-leading fourth multiple RBI game with his two-run single in the seventh. Jeff Tucker extended his hitting streak to six games with a leadoff single in the first.
Edgewood College will conclude their spring trip on Saturday morning with their final game against UW-Stout. The Eagles and Blue Devils begin at 9:00 a.m. Eastern time.
