AURORA, Ill. – It's been a long, difficult season for the Edgewood College women's basketball team, but the Eagles finished the same way they played nearly every game this season, by playing hard until the end. Aurora University held off the Eagles for a 62-53 victory despite 16 points from senior Sidney Peach.
Edgewood College (0-25, 0-20 NACC) held a brief first quarter lead when Peach made two free throws and Aleigha Sigafus converted a jumper a few possessions later for a 9-8 Eagles lead. Aurora University (6-19, 5-15 NACC) regained the lead, but another basket by Sigafus cut the Spartans' lead to 16-13 after the first period. The Eagles stayed in the game, scoring seven of the final nine points in the second quarter to trail just 25-20 at halftime. Cali Twet scored the final four points of the half with a basket and two free throws.
Aurora pushed their advantage as high as 15 points in the third quarter, but the Eagles would never let the Spartans run away with the game. Morgan Michaels and Peach nailed three-point shots to keep Edgewood College within 10 points at 45-35. In the fourth quarter Peach nearly singlehandedly sparked an Eagle comeback. The senior from Oregon, hit three three-point baskets in the period, the last of which brought the Eagles within nine points at 55-46. A Sigafus three-point play in the final minute would close the scoring on the season.
Peach finished one point short of her career-high, scoring 16 points by hitting 4-for-6 from the three-point line. Sigafus had her third double-digit scoring game of the season, pitching in 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Marissa Hoyer scored nine points.
