AURORA, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team would have liked to take a win into the offseason, but a huge start by Aurora University proved too much to overcome. Aurora University downed the Eagles 104-83 in the season finale for the Eagles at Thornton Gymnasium.
Aurora University (17-8, 15-5 NACC) hit three-pointers on their first four possessions and jumped out to a 16-0 lead before Adam Freitag put the Eagles on the board. Edgewood College regrouped and closed within 36-27 on a three-pointer by Arik Anderson with 6:37 remaining in the first half, but the Eagles struggled to keep the Spartans from scoring. Aurora led 58-42 at halftime after shooting 67.6 percent from the field.
The Spartans lead ballooned to 82-48 in the second half, before Edgewood College (5-20, 5-15 NACC) starting to gain some ground. The Eagles went on a 15-4 run, highlighted by six points from Kyle Geiger and a Jacob Miller three-point play. Edgewood College will get as close as 18 points on a layup by Zach Gaines, before Aurora's Ben Bowen hit the Spartans' 18th three-pointer of the game for the final margin.
Tyler Lemke closed his breakout sophomore season with 24 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field. Lemke averaged 26.6 points per game over the final five games of the season. Freitag scored 16 points, hitting four three-pointers in 13 attempts. Geiger added 11 points, while Miller had eight points and matched his career-high with a team-high eight rebounds. Sy Staver had six assists for the Eagles. Edgewood College shot 44.4 percent for the game. Edgewood College concludes their season and 5-20, and improvement of two wins over last year's record.
Josh DeHaan scored 25 points for Aurora, making all four of his three-point attempts. Marcus Myers scored 23 points, and Max Vickers added 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds. The Spartans shot 56.3 percent from the field and went 18-for-39 at the three-point line.
