Four Eagles score in double figures in loss at Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The young Edgewood College women's basketball hung with UW-Platteville, for three quarters on Wednesday night, but the Pioneers pulled away in the fourth period for an 82-62 victory. Four Eagles scored in double figures led by Delaney Wilhelm who scored nine of her 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Edgewood College (4-5) battled the bigger Pioneers hard, taking an early 6-2 lead on baskets by Brooke Lonigro and Allison Gordon and pair of Wilhelm free throws. UW-Platteville regained a 17-15 lead at the end of the first period, and had increased their margin to seven points, when the Eagles made their best run of the night.

Jennifer Freeman made a pair of free throws, followed by a three-point play by Gordon. Wilhelm tied the game with a jumper, and Riley Larson put the Eagles back in front 24-22 with a layup to conclude a 9-0 run. The Pioneers regrouped to take a 30-26 lead at halftime.

Abby Shane opened the second half with a fast break layup and Diamond Pikulyk tied the game at 30-30 with a jump shot, but the Eagles wouldn't regain the lead. UW-Platteville (4-4) scored the next seven points and the Eagles couldn't keep pace any longer. A 16-0 Pioneer run in the fourth quarter decisively put the game out of the Eagles' reach.

Wilhelm went 7-for-14 from the field to reach her 17 points, matching her season-high set in the opener against Illinois Tech. Gordon was 4-for-5 from the field and finished with 11 points. Lonigro and Freeman each scored 10 points, with Lonigro adding five assists. Larson pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds to go with six points.

UW-Platteville received 60 of their 82 points from the bench, led by Maiah Domask with 16 points and eight rebounds. Kassie Buchholz tallied 14 points for the Pioneers who went 20-for-24 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line.

Edgewood College finishes up their pre-Christmas schedule on Saturday with a game at Concordia University Chicago. The Eagles and Cougars tip off at 4:15 p.m.
