MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Playing the second of back-to-back road games, the Edgewood College men's soccer team saw its four-match winning streak snapped in a 3-1 loss at Cornell College. The defeat did come with a bright spot, as junior forward Garrett Lee scored his 16th goal of the season, setting a new Edgewood College single season record.
Cornell College (7-7-1) took control of the game with two goals in a two-minute span in the first half. Facundo Benavidez scored an assisted goal in the 31st minute, and Sam Duff followed with a second in the 33rd minute, assisted by Benavidez.
History arrived for Lee in the 37th minute of the game. Lee took a pass from Henry Simon and scored his 16th goal of the season, breaking the Edgewood College school record that had been held jointly by four other players who all had 15 goals in a season. Lee's 16th goal in just 15 games moved him past Edgewood College Hall of Fame member Jeff Ornes (1995), Rob Sergenian (2000), Mark Losby (2004) and Kevin Fisher (2007).
Still, the Eagles trailed 2-1 at halftime, which became a 3-1 lead for the Rams when Michael Paquette scored in the 57th minute. Edgewood College finished the game with 10 shots, including six on goal. Lee accounted for half of the Eagles' shots. Starting goalkeeper Dan Dombrowski made four saves in 60 minutes of play while Brandyn Storhoff made three saves in 30 minutes of action.
Edgewood College faces a key NACC match on Monday when the Eagles meet Dominican University on Monday afternoon.
