NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team surrendered two first half goals to North Central College in their season opener, and could not complete a comeback. The Eagles fell 2-1 despite Henry Simon's goal in the 75th minute which brought the Eagles just once score from tying the game. Edgewood College falls to 0-1 after the first of four straight road games to open the season.
North Central College (1-0) held a 9-1 advantage in shots in the first half, and broke through in the 18th minute. Ryan O'Deen scored off assists by Chandler Olah and Ivan Bohorquez for a 1-0 lead. O'Deen struck again in the 28th minute, converting a penalty kick to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.
Edgewood College (0-1) steadily began to apply more pressure in the second half. Nicholas Bilodeau recorded the Eagles first shot on goal in the 70th minute. Shortly thereafter Henry Simon put the Eagles on the board. Following a Cardinals foul Simon ripped a free kick past NCC goalkeeper Sebastian Garcia to pull the Eagles closer at 2-1.
Luke Miller nearly tied the game at the 76 minute mark with a shot that was saved by Garcia. However, that would be the end of the Eagles' scoring chances as the Cardinals hung on for the win.
Edgewood College finished with four shots for the game, including three on net. Ethan Schneider played the entire game in goal for the Eagles and finished with two saves.
Edgewood College will be off for Labor Day weekend, but will hit the road again immediately on their return. The Eagles will travel north to Ripon College on Tuesday, September 6 and then point the bus back south on Wednesday to face Judson University in Elgin, Ill.
