Game Recap: Baseball |

Spartans hand Eagles setback with sweep

AURORA, Ill. – Aurora University has been the hottest baseball team in the NACC recently, and on Sunday, Edgewood College couldn't stop them. The Eagles wasted a beautiful pitching performance by Blake Bieri in a 1-0 game one loss, and then dropped the day's second game 10-5 after giving up an eight-run first inning.

Blake Bieri could hardly have been better for Edgewood College (13-18, 9-7 NACC) throwing a complete game, three-hitter without allowing an earned run. Bieri struck out four batters and walked just one. Aurora University (20-16, 11-7 NACC) scored the game's only run in the sixth inning. The Spartans' Ryan Rybakowski reached on a one-out error and moved to second on Jeffrey Mayes single. Then Jeff Woods grounded to Tim Nunn at third, who got the force at second base, but Rybakowski raced around third and beat the throw home for the Spartans' only run.

On offense, the Eagles never advanced a runner to third base off Spartans starting pitcher Elias McMahon. The Eagles accumulated four hits, but never more than one in any inning.

In the second game, 10 of the first 11 Aurora batters reached base in an eight-run first inning. The Spartans had just three hits, but took advantage of six walks and a hit batter. Edgewood College got a run back in the third inning, when Andrew Lauritzen scored when Tim Nunn was thrown out trying to steal second base.

The Eagles scored two more in the sixth on RBI singles by Jeff Tucker and Callen Gavic to make the score 8-3, but the Eagles would get no closer. Aurora added two more runs in the eighth, which ultimately negated Jonathan Roehler's RBI single to score Ryan Cassady and Nunn's fielder's choice to bring home Lauritzen.

Garrett Bogucki led the Eagles, going 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Roehler and Tucker each had two hits, including a double. Gavic also had two hits for the Eagles, who out-hit the Spartans 13-8 for the game. Adam Eck took the loss after being relieved in the first inning. Erick Wendt was solid in more than seven innings of relief, striking out four batters and allowing just two earned runs.

The losses bring Edgewood College down to a tie for fifth place in the league. With four games remaining, the Eagles can clinch a NACC Tournament spot with three wins or two wins and some help from other teams.

Edgewood College gets their first chance to shake off Sunday's disappointment with a home doubleheader on Tuesday against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Eagles and Warriors will start at 2:00 p.m.
