Eagles let pair of leads slip away at WLC

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Edgewood College led for most of both games in its first bit of NACC action on Saturday at Neumann Family Field but came up empty-handed to fall to 6-10 overall and 0-2 in league play. Wisconsin Lutheran scored five runs over its final two trips to the plate in game one to pull out a 6-5 win and did the same in the nightcap to win 5-2.

Wisconsin Lutheran scored an unearned run in the first but the Eagles responded by scoring at least one run in the next three innings to take control in the day's first game. Sydney Cramer had a two-RBI single in the second to get on the board while the Eagles scored a run apiece (both unearned) in the next two frames.

After WLC scored another in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2, the Eagles scored an insurance run in the sixth thanks to Jackie Diesch's double to left field that scored Cramer. WLC stormed right back by scoring four in the bottom of the sixth with help from three hits to lead off the inning, a two-RBI triple and a wild pitch.

Edgewood College senior Rachel DeJongh was hit with the loss after going 5.2 innings while allowing five earned runs. She struck out five while Karlie Klossner came on in relief for the last out. The Eagles registered six hits by six different batters. Diesch and Jordan Anderson each had doubles while Kylie Clark, Sabrina Maicke, Shannon Whitmus and Cramer (3 RBIs) had the other base knocks.

A Jordan Anderson double to left center that scored Clark got the Eagles on the board in the top of the first in the second game. Clark had singled to the shortstop two batters earlier.

Whitmus was flawless in the circle for most of game two until the Warriors settled in during the fifth. DeJongh had scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to go up 2-0 but the Warriors took the lead in the fifth on a two-run home run and an RBI fielder's choice.

Whitmus remained in the circle in the sixth and gave up two runs before being replaced by Klossner. The Eagles went down 1-2-3 at the plate in the seventh.

Jordan Anderson had two of the Eagles' five hits and registered the team's lone RBI. Diesch, Clark and Alyssa Hickey also had singles in the contest. Whitmus allowed five earned in 5.1 innings of work and struck out one while WLC's Abby Mahsem got the win after striking out six in the complete game win.

The Eagles host Lakeland College Monday at 2 pm in a doubleheader that was originally cancelled this past Saturday due to inclement weather. The games will be played at Ceniti Park in Verona, Wis.
