Eagles celebrate Senior Day vs. Alverno

MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College dropped a pair of home games and fell out of postseason contention on Friday at Ceniti Park as the Eagles celebrated four members of their senior class. The Eagles lost game one 6-2 and fell 8-1 in game two against Alverno College in the final game at Ceniti Park this year.

Jordan Anderson and Jackie Diesch, one of the four seniors being honored on the day, turned in the two run-producing hits in game one. Anderson singled to right center in the fourth to make it a 1-1 ballgame and Diesch gave the Eagles their first lead of the game after singling in Alyssa Hickey one inning later.

The Eagles didn't hold their lead very long, as the Inferno delivered with a big hit in the next half inning. Eagles senior starting pitcher Rachel DeJongh got two outs in the frame but Megan Hernandez took a 2-1 offering with two runners on and hit one out to straight center field to go up 4-2. The Inferno added an insurance run on a sac fly in the seventh to go up 5-2 but the Eagles went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.

DeJongh recorded her 300th career strikeout in the second inning and finished with five punchouts on the day. She allowed three earned runs over six innings, while Shannon Whitmus came on in the seventh and struck out one batter. Sydney Cramer was the only Eagles batter with multiple hits in game one after going 2-for-2.

Alverno jumped on board right away in game two and scored four runs on two hits and capitalized on two errors in the first inning. Edgewood College had two hits in the bottom of the first but couldn't find a way to push them across. Grace Delleman then smacked her sixth home run for the team's only run to lead off the second. She jumped on a 1-1 pitch and sent it sailing over the left field fence to make it 4-1.

The Eagles managed two hits after Delleman's long ball and Alverno had pulled away by scoring another in the third and three in the sixth. Kylie Clark went 2-for-3 while Diesch and Sabrina Luedtke had the other base knocks for the team.

Eagles senior starting pitcher Karlie Klossner allowed five earned over six innings and struck out two while Courtney Leuzinger allowed just one hit in her inning of work.

Along with Diesch, DeJongh and Klossner, Edgewood College also celebrated Erica Remondini, the team's manager for the past four seasons.

The Eagles wrap up the 2016 season with a doubleheader at Marian in Fond du Lac, Wis., on Saturday, April 30.
