PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team stepped out of conference play and into a buzz saw against UW-Platteville on Thursday night. The Pioneers used an eight-run fourth inning to blow open a tied game and cruise to a 15-2 victory at Kendall Murray Field.
After UW-Platteville (11-9) scored single runs in the first and second innings against Edgewood College starter Bridger Berrett, the Eagles tied the game in the fourth inning. Nick Lehner led off with a walk, followed by a two-out walk to Brodie Engel. Steve Gavin then came up and smashed a double to center field, scoring both Lehner and Engel.
However from that point on, it was mostly bad news for Edgewood College (8-14). UW-Platteville's Casey Schroeder blasted a grand slam home run and Evan Greco followed it with a two-run blast as part of the eight-run fourth inning, giving the Pioneers a 10-2 lead. Edgewood College had just two more base hits the rest of the way.
Junior Tim Nunn went 2-for-4 on the day, while Gavin had the Eagles' lone extra-base hit. Andrew Lauritzen had a base hit and his team-leading ninth stolen base of the season. Berrett struck out five batters in 3.2 innings, but suffered the loss for Edgewood College. Seven Eagle pitchers combined for eight strikeouts on the afternoon.
Edgewood College heads into an important NACC weekend with two doubleheaders on the slate. On Saturday, the Eagles travel to Franklin, Wis. to face MSOE. The Raiders currently sit in a tie for second place in the league. On Sunday, Edgewood College hosts Lakeland College at Stampfl Field in Verona. First pitch on Sunday will be at 1:00 p.m.
