Eagles fall to Amherst in Gene Cusic finale

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore catcher Garrett Bogucki and senior centerfielder Andrew Lauritzen each provided two-run bombs Saturday morning in Edgewood College's (4-6) finale at the Gene Cusic Classic but Amherst College's (7-1) persistent offensive attack proved too much. Amherst scored 10 runs over the final three innings en route to a 17-5 win at the Lee County Player Development Complex.

Amherst got to Eagles starter Blake Bieri in the second inning with an RBI single but Edgewood College countered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning thanks to Bogucki's home run. It was his second of the season and it knocked in Nick Lehner, who singled one batter earlier.

Amhert then began to open things up in the fourth by scoring four runs to knock Bieri out. They racked up five hits in the frame and freshman Ryan Howell entered and wound up racking up the last two outs of the inning.

Lauritzen delivered his shot an inning and a half later with a round tripper that knocked in Jonathan Roehler, who was hit by a pitch one batter earlier. The blast pulled the Eagles within one at 5-4 going into the sixth.

Amherst would go on to score at least one run in each of the final four innings, including five in the seventh and four more in the eighth to cruise to the victory. The Eagles's last run would come on a Bogucki RBI single to score Lauritzen in the seventh.

Lauritzen, Bogucki and Lehner each finished with two hits apiece to pace the offense. Bogucki's three RBIs led the team while Lauritzen notched two runs to finish first on the team. Bieri was saddled with the loss after allowing eight hits and five earned over 3.1 innings.

The Eagles will return home and square off against Carroll University in non-conference action on Friday, March 25. The Eagles and Pioneers will battled at 2pm at Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream, Ill.
