FORT MYERS, Fla. – Edgewood College nearly came out on top in a pitcher's duel in the first game of the fourth day at the 2016 Gene Cusic Classic but fell 4-3 to Suffolk University. The Eagles then dropped a 10-0 game in five innings later in the afternoon to the College of Wooster.
The Eagles were hurt by runners being left on base throughout both games. Against Suffolk, who improved to 3-0 on the year with the win, Edgewood College left 12 runners on base in the nail-biting loss.
Both teams got on board right away, as Suffolk knocked in two runs in the top half of the inning and Jackie Diesch came around to score in the bottom half on a Sabrina Maicke fielder's choice. The Eagles left two runners on in each of the first two innings and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the third.
The Eagles caught up to the Rams with a pair of runs in the fourth thanks to a Grace Delleman single to center field that knocked in Maicke and Diesch. The Rams, however, responded immediately with an RBI single to left field in the next half inning.
The Eagles led off the sixth and seventh innings with leadoff singles and moved both runners to second base but couldn't bring them around to score. Diesch, Delleman and DeJongh all finished with two hits apiece while Maicke picked up the other in the loss.
Karlie Klossner pitched the first three innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits while DeJongh allowed one earned run on just four hits over the final four frames while striking out five.
Shannon Whitmus got out of the first inning unscathed but had trouble getting through the next two innings. Wooster had four runners cross home plate in the second on three hits and a pair of walks. One of those hits was a two-run bomb to left center.
After a pair of runs in the third and two baserunners in the fourth, Klossner relieved Whitmus but the Fighting Scots managed four more to put the eight-run rule into effect. Kylie Clark went 1-for-2 while Whitmus had the other hit for the Eagles in the game with a single. Whitmus dropped to 0-2 after tossing three innings while Klossner tossed the final frame.
The Eagles wrap up the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday, March 15 with a 8 am (CT) game against Minnesota-Morris and a 10 am (CT) game against Nichols College. Both will be played at the CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
