MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team rode a huge second quarter to a 74-60 victory over Rockford University at the Todd Wehr Edgedome on Saturday. Edgewood College put four players in double figures led by a career-high 17 points off the bench from Cole Jordee.
Edgewood College (6-15, 5-11 NACC) battled the Regents through a close first period, but received a lift when Sierra Jiran scored on a rebound and put back at the buzzer for a 20-16 lead. The moment carried over into the second period, as the Eagles scored the first nine points of the period to take a 29-16 lead, holding Rockford University (2-19, 0-16 NACC) without a field goal for more than five and a half minutes. Jordee scored five points in that run with a free throw, a fast break basket off a Rachel Pope steal and layup inside.
Erin Morovits continued the run with a three-pointer. Later on, Pope ripped off a steal and scored on a breakaway and Jazmin Little made three free throws for a 39-18 lead and a 19-2 run. The Eagles halftime lead eventually ballooned to 45-21.
However, the Eagles went cold in the third period, failing to score for the first five minutes until Jordee made one of two free throws. The Regents eventually cut the lead all the way down to 54-43 thanks to a running three-point buzzer beater by Taylor Davis to end the third period.
Edgewood College opened the fourth period on a 10-5 run behind baskets from four different players and seemed to have the game back in hand. But Rockford 10 of the next 11 points, to get as close as they would ever get in the second half, trailing just 65-58 with 5:27 to go. Two possessions later, Pope buried a big three-pointer from the left corner to put the Eagles back ahead by double digits. Casey Pettit scored for the Regents to make it 68-60 with 2:43 to go, but that would be Rockford's final points of the game. Jordee and Pope both converted baskets against the Regents' full court pressure to seal the victory and snap a three-game losing streak.
Jordee nearly doubled her previous career-high of nine points, scoring 17 on 6-for-10 shooting. Pope tallied 16 points and led all players with eight rebounds. Little and Jiran each had 12 points, that number marking a season-high for Little. Little also recorded five of the Eagles 15 steals, which was the most steals by an Eagles team since February 4, 2014. Edgewood College shot 48.4 percent in the first half and 44.3 percent for the game.
Rockford was led by Mallorie Getzelman who went 5-for-9 from the field for 16 points. Amanda Davis scored 13 points, while Taylor Davis had 12. The Regents were perfect at the three-point line, going 6-for-6 in the game, but were hampered by 34 turnovers.
Edgewood College will play their next three games on the road beginning on Wednesday night at Marian University. The Eagles and Sabres will get underway at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles defeated Marian in Madison 66-53 back on January 13.
