MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Edgewood College softball team finds itself at 2-2 after the conclusion of the Finlandia University Dome Tournament. The Eagles started the final day of competition with a 19-2 loss to Lake Superior State but rebounded with a 10-4 victory in the finale against Finlandia University.
In game one, Lake Superior State threatened in the first but couldn't push one across before igniting for eight runs apiece in the second and third innings. A grand slam put them up 5-0 to highlight the second inning while a three-run shot in the third put the Lakers up 16-0.
The Lakers would add three more in the fifth but the Eagles finally got on board in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Kylie Clark single that knocked in Sydney Cramer and Sabrina Luedtke.
Sydney Cramer, Sabrina Maicke, Shannon Whitmus and Luedtke recorded the other hits for the Eagles in the game. Rachel DeJongh suffered the loss and went 1.2 innings while Whitmus pitched the rest of the way.
In the game against host Finlandia, the Eagles rallied late and used a big sixth inning to down the Lions. Finlandia scored on an error in the first and added two more in the third to go up 3-1 after DeJongh scored on a passed ball in the second.
A Maicke RBI single in the fifth pulled the Eagles to within one but before long the Eagles would take the commanding lead.
Jordan Anderson led off the next inning with her second home run of the season. After Jackie Diesch was hit by a pitch, DeJongh and Grace Delleman singled to bring up Karlie Klossner. Klossner tripled to score a pair and was knocked in shortly after on a Luedtke base knock to make it 7-3. Maicke then clubbed a ground rule double later in the inning to extend the lead to six runs.
Finlandia was held hitless from that point on as Klossner picked up her second win of the season. Delleman rounded out the scoring with her first home run of her collegiate career in the seventh.
Klossner, a senior from Monticello, Wis., threw five innings and allowed nine hits and just two earned runs. DeJongh was in the circle for the final two innings and didn't surrender a hit while striking our four batters.
Maicke, Jordan Anderson and Delleman all picked up two hits in the game while Maicke led the team with three RBIs. Cramer, DeJongh and Delleman all scored two runs while Klossner finished tied for second on the team along with Delleman in RBIs with two.
The Eagles are now off until Friday, March 11 when they begin the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Eagles will play 10 games on the trip and will begin with The College at Brockport at noon (CT) at North Collier Regional Park.
