LISLE, Ill. – Edgewood College fell in its final road game of the 2015-16 season Saturday afternoon against the second-ranked team in the country at the Rice Center. The Eagles led early on against No. 2 Benedictine University but eventually fell in the NACC showdown by a score of 88-54. Arik Anderson and Adam Freitag led the Eagles in scoring on the day with 10 points apiece.
McClain Steffens and Adam Freitag had back-to-back layups on the team's second and third possessions of the game to jump out to the early lead. Benedictine tied things up at four shortly after but a Spencer Barnes free throw and triples from Freitag and Barnes moments later gave the Eagles a seven-point lead at 11-4.
Benedictine then proved their worth among the nation's top Division III programs, going on a 28-5 run to take a 32-16 lead with 5:55 left in the half. Barnes finally ended the drought with his second three-pointer on the day with 5:07 left. Anderson drilled the final basket of the half for Edgewood College on an assist from Sy Staver 59 seconds before the break.
Benedictine scored the first two buckets of the second half before Staver knocked down a three-pointer with 18:09 remaining. Benedictine would hold a commanding lead the rest of the way in outscoring Edgewood College 47-33 in the second.
Anderson scored eight of his 10 in the second half on 3-of-4 shooting and knocked down both of his three-point attempts. Jim Bridges scored six of his eight after the break while Simon Breunig was solid down the stretch with seven points. Steffens grabbed 10 rebounds on the day and dished out a team-high four assists.
Benedictine's Matt Chaltin led the home team with 18 points off the bench while Lucas Johnson had 17 points and five assists.
The Eagles now head into the final week of the season and will get to remain at home. They host Concordia Wisconsin at 7 pm on Wednesday and Aurora University at 2 pm on Saturday.
