Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Titans utilize free throws to overpower Eagles

MADISON, Wis. – Despite matching No. 21 UW-Oshkosh shot-for-shot in the first half and getting a career-high 19 points from sophomore Sy Staver, the Edgewood College men's basketball team dropped their home opener, 74-63, after being outscored by 20 points at the free throw line.

Led by a balanced scoring effort and a rebounding advantage over the taller, longer Titans, the Eagles found themselves down just two points at the break. UW-Oshkosh, the WIAC preseason favorites, utilized a 14-3 run to stake a 48-35 lead they wouldn't relinquish. A pair of Staver free throws pulled them to within eight points with 5:26 remaining, but the Titans (2-1) kept the Eagles at bay thanks to a barrage of free throws.

UW-Oshkosh took advantage of 17 fouls en route to an 18-for-25 effort at the charity stripe in the second half and converted 27 of 36 (75.0 percent) on the game. Guard Charlie Noone led the charge at the line after converting 8-of-9 free throws and finished with a team-high 18 points and five assists.

Staver kept the Eagles (0-2) in it and was stellar from the outset after adding a game-high six assists to go with five rebounds on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor. The sophomore found the lane on a majority of his touches and converted five of his team's seven free throws.

The Eagles outshot the Titans from the field and the three-point line and thanks to sophomore Tyler Lemke's career-high 11 rebounds, also held the advantage on the boards, 39-37. It wasn't quite enough to overcome the free throw disparity.

Sophomore McClain Steffens chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds while sophomore Emil Radisevic added seven points and eight boards. It was the Titans seventh-straight win over the Eagles as they upped their record to 24-4 in the all-time series.

Next up for the Eagles is their NACC opener against Lakeland this Saturday, November 26 at 4:15 p.m. in the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
