Stars hold off late Eagles rally

MADISON, Wis. - Dominican University gave the Edgewood College men's basketball team chances to steal a late victory at the Edgedome on Saturday, but the Stars held off the Eagles 75-68. Dominican missed the front end of bonus free throws three times down the stretch, but the Eagles couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. With the loss, the Eagles settle for a season split with the Stars.

Dominican University (3-13, 2-10 NACC) seemed poised to run away with the game after Josh Mayberry scored a steal and a layup for a 63-44 lead with just under 12 minutes to go. However, the Eagles rallied behind a 7-0 run sparked by a three-pointer by Adam Freitag and back-to-back baskets by Emil Radisevic and Emilio Lopez to cut the margin to 67-61.

Edgewood College (2-15, 2-10 NACC) was still down just six points at 71-65 with 1:19 remaining and was forced to send the Stars to the free throw line. Dominican obliged by missing the front end on three straight one-and-ones but the Eagles only converted those misses into one McClain Steffens free throw on the other end. Eventually, the Stars would make four out of six free throws while the Eagles got just their final two points of the game from Freitag.

The Eagles struggled through a 25.8 percent shooting effort in the first half in falling behind 42-30 at the break. Spencer Barnes hit a pair of three-point baskets that put the Eagles ahead 10-8, but the Stars' Antonio Amoah answered with a three-pointer of his own and Dominican never trailed again.

Freitag led the Eagles with 19 points, all scored in the second half. He was 7-for-11 from the field after the break. Emilio Lopez contributed 13 points and shared team-high rebound honors with Radisevic at eight boards apiece. Barnes and Jim Bridges each had eight points. Sy Staver and Lopez tallied four assists apiece. The Eagles shot 44.1 percent in the second half and 35.4 percent for the game.

Dominican received a huge lift off the bench from Amoah who scored 26 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Starter Josh Mayberry also had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Stars shot 41.7 percent from the field.

Edgewood College will be on the road for their next two contests, heading to Milwaukee to face MSOE on Tuesday, before a trip to Aurora University on Saturday.
