Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Barnes’ late push falls short vs. Marian

MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College suffered through a long scoring drought in the first half Thursday night at home against Marian, but junior guard Spencer Barnes sure made things interesting down the stretch in the second half. The 6-0 native of Anamosa, Iowa hit three triples in a row and four in a five-possession stretch late in the second but the Eagles ultimately fell 74-58 to the Sabres.

Barnes' late flurry was much needed for an Edgewood College team that started 2-of-20 from the floor to start the game. His clinic from downtown helped bring the Eagles to within 11 points with 4:57 left in the game. Edgewood College was down 25 just three and a half minutes earlier.

Dylan Heemstra assisted on Barnes' first while his last three were unassisted. The final trey ball during that stretch was a deep 25-footer early in the shot clock that made it 62-51. One possession earlier Emilio Lopez nailed a jumper from the top of key to round out a streak in which the Eagles scored on five-straight possessions.

Marian then hit free throws two possessions later to quiet the Edgedome crowd. Josh Creed converted on a jumper in the paint and Connor Morovits buried a three-pointer shortly after to give the Sabres an 18-point lead with 2:35 left.

The Eagles wound up shooting 33.8 percent (23-of-68) in the game. They started the game 2-of-20 but ended the first half on a 7-of-14 streak to make it a 43-21 game heading into the break.

12 different Eagles scored on the night, with Barnes' 12 leading the way on 4-of-7 shooting. Jim Bridges had eight points while Lopez, Sy Staver and Emil Radisevic had six apiece. Lopez grabbed seven rebounds while Radisevic and Dylan Heemstra each had five.

Josh Creed led the Sabres with 16 points, 16 boards and five assists. The Sabres shot 43.2 percent in the first half but the Eagles held them to a mark of just 32.4 in the second.

The Eagles are off until next Wednesday, Jan. 20. They will take on Wisconsin Lutheran College at the Edgedome that day. Tip is set for 7 pm.
