Season ends after comeback falls short

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Edgewood College's 2015 season came to a close Friday morning at Alverno Field after a comeback attempt fell short against Concordia Chicago in the NACC Tournament. The Cougars jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, but Edgewood College made things interesting by pulling within two in the fifth inning. The Cougars then added one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to hand the Eagles their second loss of the NACC Tournament.

Edgewood College didn't go down without fighting, as they made the middle innings interesting with huge threats. In the top of the third down 6-1, Sabrina Maicke ripped a line drive down the left field line with the bases loaded and one out, but CUC third baseman Michele Alexander snagged the line shot and doubled up the runner on third.

The Eagles pushed across their second run of the game in the fourth to make it 6-2 thanks to a Rachel DeJongh RBI single down the left field line that scored Kayla Updike.

The Eagles managed two more in the fifth to make it a two-run ballgame and nearly scored many more. Leadoff batter Kylie Clark led off the inning with a single up the middle and Alexis Unser then had a base knock through the left side. After a foul out, a Maicke RBI single and a hit by pitch, Updike came to the plate and was walked to push another across.

CUC then changed pitchers before DeJongh got a hold of an inside pitch and cranked it to almost the exact same spot as Maicke's liner in the third. The Cougars third baseman caught the liner and doubled up the runner on third again to end the threat.

The Eagles fell short in the final two innings with two hits in the sixth and another in the seventh, but CUC reliever Julianne Nation allowed no runs to come across to record her first save of the season.

DeJongh went six innings and only three of her nine runs allowed were earned. She struck out four and didn't walk any CUC batters.

Clark wound up going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Unser ended up with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate with one run scored. Updike was the other Eagles batter with multiple hits after finishing 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Katie Landon pushed across the first run of the game with an RBI double to left center in the top of the first.

Edgewood College ended the season having the most conference wins (11) since the 2010 season and competed in the NACC Tournament for the first time since 2008. The Eagles close the season with an overall record of 18-25.
