VERONA, Wis. - Edgewood College knew it had to come away with a sweep at home on Senior Day Sunday afternoon in order to stay alive in the NACC standings and did just that with a pair of wins over Wisconsin Lutheran College. Karlie Klossner pitched a complete game shutout in game one and Rachel DeJongh held the Warriors to just two runs in the nightcap to give the Eagles their first taste of postseason play in seven years.
The Eagles needed two wins and had to have Alverno College lose at least one of its three remaining games in the regular season in order to clinch the No. 6 spot. The Eagles took care of business with a 6-0 win in game one and were up early on the Warriors in game two when Alverno fell in their first game. The Eagles then closed out a 5-2 win in game two to seal the deal.
Klossner and the defense behind her were lights out in game one. She allowed only five hits and the Eagles committed no errors in the field. The Eagles got on board in the bottom of the second thanks to RBIs from DeJongh and Alyssa Schulting, one of four seniors recognized on the day. The Eagles then went on to score at least a run in each of the next three innings.
Katie Landon, another senior recognized on the day, had an RBI single in the third, Schulting and shortstop Kylie Clark knocked in one apiece in the fourth and Kayla Updike plated another in the fifth and all of a sudden the Eagles were in control. Klossner allowed only two Warrior runners to reach third base, with the first coming in the first inning and the second coming in the third.
Clark and Schulting paced the Eagles with two hits apiece, while Schulting was the lone Eagles batter with multiple RBIs.
Sabrina Maicke and Updike gave DeJongh the early lead after knocking in runs in the bottom of the first inning in game two. DeJongh was able to hold that lead until the third, when Brittany Koss and Tara Degl'lnnocenti recorded RBIs for the Warriors to knot things at two.
Schulting and Martha Sommers responded in a huge way in the next half inning. Schulting knocked in Jackie Diesch and Landon with a double over the left fielder's head and Sommers then pulled through with an RBI groundout to make it a three-run ballgame.
DeJongh then allowed only three more hits the rest of the way to pick up her seventh win of the season.
Second baseman Alexis Unser and catcher Dylan Bahrke were the other seniors celebrating their last home games of their collegiate careers. Unser went 1-for-2 in game one and was one of four Eagles with two hits in game two. Bahrke caught another baserunner stealing and now has 22 on her career, which ranks as the third-most in school history.Â
Edgewood College will play No. 3 Concordia Wisconsin at 10:00 am Thursday, April 30 at Alverno Field in Milwaukee, Wis. The Eagles will then play that same day at 2:00 pm against No. 2 seed Benedictine if they beat CUW or will play at 9:00 am Friday, May 1 if they lose their opening game.
