MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's tennis team capped a perfect circuit through the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with a 7-2 victory over Aurora University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles 8-0 NACC record secured the school's first outright conference championship and clinched the top seed for next Saturday's NACC Tournament.
Edgewood College (14-10, 8-0 NACC) swept through doubles play on their way to a school record eighth consecutive dual match victory. Brian Davenport and Michael Wanta turned in an 8-2 victory over Aurora's Jake Lipka and David Cross. In singles play, Austin Papenthien won his No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-1 over the Spartan's Ricky Hernandez. Jamie Benavides and Davenport both won their matches to improve to a perfect 8-0 in NACC singles play.
Edgewood College will play in the NACC Tournament semifinals next Saturday at 12:15 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. The winner of the NACC Tournament, held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Edgewood College will be looking for their first NCAA Tournament berth in school history.
