Cougars stop Eagles in doubleheader sweep

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team ran into stiff resistance and the noisy bats of Concordia University Chicago on Saturday at Stampfl Field. The Eagles couldn't slow down the Cougars offense in a pair of 17-6 and 11-1 defeats. Edgewood College slipped back to 4-4 in the NACC, heading into another doubleheader tomorrow at Dominican University.

The first game started off as a slugfest with Concordia Chicago (14-12, 6-2 NACC) scoring runs in the first and three in the second. The Eagles tried to match with an RBI single by Garrett Bogucki and a run scoring groundout by Brad Clark in the first inning.

Edgewood College (7-13, 4-4 NACC) posted their biggest inning of the day with four runs in the second. Pat Manning forced home the first run with a bases loaded walk. Andrew Lauritzen and Zack Creekmore drove in runs with RBI groundouts, and Bogucki came through again with an RBI single to cut the Cougars lead to 7-6. However, that was as close as the Eagles would get. The Cougars pounded out nine runs over the next two innings to blow the game wide open.

Edgewood College was led by Bogucki who had three hits and drove in two runs. Danny Appino had two hits and two runs scored, while Lauritzen also had two hits. It was a rough outing for Edgewood College starter Bridger Berrett who took the loss, pitching just three innings. AJ Weedon entered in the fourth inning and finished the game.

The second game wasn't much better for the Eagles as Concordia Chicago starter Cody Caballero pitched a three-hit complete game. The Eagles scored their only run in the sixth inning when Appino singled to lead off the inning and eventually scored from third base on a wild pitch. Pat Manning had hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to 13 straight games. Unfortunately, Creekmore went 0-for-1 in the second game ending his career-long hitting streak at 14 games.

Edgewood College heads to Dominican University tomorrow for a key NACC doubleheader. The Stars are 7-3 in the NACC after sweeping Aurora today.
