Eagles go winless in Day 4 of Tucson trip

MADISON, Wis. - The Eagles couldn't come out on top in a pitcher's duel early Monday afternoon against the University of Dubuque and followed up that effort with an 11-0 loss to No. 16 Central College at Lincoln Park. With the losses the Eagles are now 2-6 at the Tucson Invitational Games and 4-8 overall on the season.

Junior starting pitcher Rachel DeJongh allowed just two runs—none earned—on only two hits and struck out four against the Spartans but couldn't get any run support in the 2-0 loss. Dubuque leadoff hitter Meggie Schmidt plated the first run of the game after scoring in a first-and-third situation in the bottom of the first. Second baseman Ainsley Billesbach took off for second but Dylan Bahrke's throw sailed into center field, allowing Schmidt to scamper home.

DeJongh wouldn't allow another hit until the sixth inning, when catcher Courtney Markin singled up the middle. Back-to-back errors in the field allowed Dubuque to score another run and the Eagles went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to drop the contest. Alexis Unser, Katie Landon and Martha Sommers recorded the Eagles' only three hits of the game while DeJongh was tagged with the loss and dropped to 3-3 on the year.

Karlie Klossner pitched well for the first four innings against an offensive-minded Central College team before running into trouble in the top of the fifth. The Dutch recorded four-straight hits to lead off the inning before head coach JP Richards pulled Klossner and inserted Shannon Whitmus. Central would eventually send 11 batters to the plate in the inning and scored seven runs. Katie Canney highlighted the frame with a single that knocked in two for the Dutch.

Sommers and Bahrke were the lone Eagles players to record hits in the game. The only time the Eagles had a runner reach second base was in the bottom of the fifth when DeJongh reached on an error and Sommers singled to left. Klossner wound up going 4+ innings while allowing eight runs—six earned—on nine hits. Mallory Schulenberg got the win and improved to 3-2 by allowing just one hit over her four innings of work. She struck out nine in the effort.

The Eagles will wrap up competition at the Tucson Invitational Games tomorrow morning with an 11:00 am (CT) game against UW-La Crosse and a 1 pm (CT) game against Crown College. The next time the Eagles will compete won't be until Saturday, March 28, when Edgewood College is scheduled to play Benedictine University in a doubleheader at Ceniti Park starting at 12 pm (CT).
