Eagles rally but can't get past UWSP

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team rallied in the second half, but couldn't overcome UW-Stevens Point in their final game at the Just A Game Fieldhouse Tournament. The Eagles trimmed an 18-point third period lead down to three before falling 58-49 to the Pointers. The game concluded the Eagles' non-conference schedule for the season.

After trailing 18-12 at the end of the first period, Edgewood College (2-9) opened the second with a steal and a layup by Rachel Pope and a three-pointer for Zoey Dougherty to cut the Pointers' lead to 18-17. However, UW-Stevens Point (8-2) went on a 17-4 run and took a 37-23 lead into halftime.

UWSP scored six of the first eight points of the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 43-25 with 6:12 to go, before the Eagles began to cut away at the lead. Marissa Hoyer and Pope sandwiched baskets around an Erin Morovits three-pointer for a 7-0 run. The Eagles still trailed by 11 to open the fourth period when Sierra Jiran and Dougherty hit three-pointers. After an Allison Gordon free throw Jiran nailed another triple and the Eagles trailed just 49-46 with 5:03 left to play.

But the Pointers regained their balance from that point. Taylor Douglas scored a hoop and Lauren Anklam sunk a three-pointer to put UWSP back ahead 53-46. Pope added the Eagles final three points, but UW-Stevens Point escaped with the victory.

The Eagles were led by Jiran who tallied three three-point baskets and finished with 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Pope extended her streak of scoring in double figures to 11 games with 11 points and a team-high six assists. Dougherty added six points on her pair of three-pointers. The Eagles were 4-for-9 from the three-point line in the second half.

Douglas led UW-Stevens Point with 13 points off the bench. Anklam was the only other Pointer in double figures with 10 points. UWSP shot 60 percent in the first half, but the Eagles limited them to just five field goals and 21.7 percent in the second half.

Edgewood College will play their third game in four days on Saturday, back in Madison. The Eagles will host Alverno College at the Edgedome in a 4:15 p.m. tipoff.
