Muskies’ strong 2nd half start clips Eagles

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Facing only an eight-point haltime deficit, the Edgewood College Eagles came out sluggish in the second half and fell to Lakeland College in the 2015-16 NACC opener by a score of 74-52. The Eagles were outscored 43-18 in the paint and eventually fell 74-52 to fall to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the NACC.

10 different Eagles players scored in the first half but the Muskies proved to be too much inside to take the lead heading into the locker room. Dylan Heemstra hit a three-pointer and and Jim Bridges would hit a jumper to tie things at five apiece early on. Joshuan McNeal would drill a triple shortly after to give the Muskies a lead they would never surrender the rest of the way.

The Eagles would keep it within eight points the rest of the half. Buckets from Emilio Lopez, Tyler Westrick and Adam Freitag would bring the Eagles within two points at 21-19 with 7:49 left in the half, but the Muskies would stretch it back to eight points with help from a 48.4 field goal percentage in the opening frame.

Lakeland College would put things away with an 11-2 run to start the second half that would give them a 46-29 lead. Adam Freitag would end the hot streak from the opposition with a three-pointer and Lopez would hit free throws on the next possession to make it 48-34, but the Eagles would never get closer than 12 points from there on out.

The Muskies would follow up their hot first half shooting with a 14-of-28 performance in the second half to finish at 49.2 percent (29-of-59) for the game. The Eagles shot 19-of-54 (35.2 percent) and hit just 3-of-19 three-pointers (15.8 percent).

Freitag was the lone Eagles player in double figures with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting while Trevon Ampe led the team in rebounds with six during his first bit of action of the season. Ampe also finished second on the team with eight points.

The Eagles will resume action on Tuesday, Dec. 1 with a home game against MSOE at 7 pm from the Edgedome.
