Eagles prevail over Mount Mary in home opener

MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College had little trouble in its home opener at the Todd Wehr Edgedome Wednesday night against Mount Mary University, as the Eagles never trailed and stretched their lead to 26 points at one point in the second half. With the win the Eagles improved to 1-1 on the season heading into conference play.

The Eagles started on a 7-0 run thanks to a Sierra Jiran layup and three-pointer along with a Sydney Smith lay-in. The Blue Angels would bring it to 9-5 but the Eagles would go on a 13-6 run to close out the first period.

A Kortni Kohl three-pointer and three-straight baskets by Pope in the second period would give the Eagles a commanding 31-13 lead and they would head into the locker room up 36-15. The Eagles shot 40.6 percent in the first half compared to a mark of just 24.0 from the opposition.

The Eagles and Blue Angels each scored eight points in the third period. Rachel Pope had two quick baskets early on in the frame while Pope and Morovits scored buckets just over a minute apart later on.

Edgewood College got back to more efficient play in the fourth after scoring 16 points, as five different players scored for the Eagles. They also bounced back to shoot 83.3 percent from the free throw line in the second half compared to just a 58.3 showing in the first.

Pope led Edgewood College again with 15 points while Erin Morovits was right behind with a career-high 14 on 4-of-8 shooting. Hannah Euting was the other Eagles player in double figures after scoring 10 points. Jiran led the Eagles in the rebounding department while Euting wound up with seven.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 against Concordia Wisconsin at home for their first conference matchup of the season. The game is set to begin at 7:00 pm from the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
