MADISON, Wis. – For the third-straight game the Edgewood College Eagles lost in heartbreaking fashion, this time at the hands of MSOE in overtime by a score of 70-69 at the Todd Wehr Edgedome Tuesday. MSOE's Collin Seubert missed the front end of a one-and-one up 70-69 with 18 seconds left to give Edgewood College the game's final possession. The Eagles failed to get a shot off after Dylan Rusch turned the ball over while driving into a crowded lane in the final seconds after losing his footing. It was the Eagles' (8-11, 7-7 NACC) third-straight loss by three points or less.
Edgewood College scored the first five points of overtime after Trevor Neale knocked down a pair of free throws and Tal Diekvoss connected for his seventh and final triple of the night. Jeremiah Erdmann finally got the Raiders on the board in the extra frame after converting on a layup with 3:12 remaining to make it 67-64 Eagles. After an Eagles' turnover and a missed layup, MSOE's Nathan Verdun hit a three-pointer to tie things up at 67 with 2:18 remaining.
Neale hit a layup two possessions later to give the lead back to Edgewood College with just 58 seconds remaining on the clock. MSOE's Austin Stueck, the NACC's leading scorer, came down just 13 seconds later and drained a triple at the top of the key to make it 70-69 Raiders with 45 seconds left. The Eagles missed two shots on their next possession before being forced to foul Seubert with 18 seconds remaining.
The game featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties, with eight of the lead changes coming in either the second half or overtime. The largest MSOE lead came at 3:43 in the first half when Stueck hit a jumper in the paint to go up eight, while the Eagles' largest lead didn't come until Diekvoss' triple in the extra period. The Eagles wouldn't have even had a shot in the overtime period if not for Rusch's highly-contest left-handed layup that found its way through the net with just under two seconds remaining in regulation to tie things at 62.
Diekvoss set a new career high and tied the school record in three-pointers made in a single game after going 7-for-11 (63.6%) from downtown. His 21 points tied for the game high with Neale, who finished with the first double-double of his career after hauling in 11 boards. Rusch (14) also finished in double figures after going 6-of-12 from the floor.
Verdun (16) wound up leading the way for MSOE with Stueck (15) right behind on 6-of-14 shooting. Seubert (11) and Erdmann (10) also reached double figures.
The Eagles are now tied for sixth with MSOE in the NACC standings with six league games remaining on the schedule. The Eagles will try to stop the three-game skid at home on Saturday on Jam the Gym night. They will host Benedictine at 4:15 pm.
