RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Edgewood College wasted no time getting out to a double-digit lead Saturday afternoon at Igini Sports Forum against the Dominican University Stars, as the Eagles opened the game with a 10-0 run and led by as many as 31 points in the second half in a 76-57 win.
Junior guard Zoey Dougherty scored the first five points for the Eagles in the first four possessions. Shortly after Sierra Jiran converted on a layup and Rachel Pope hit a three one possession later for a quick 10-0 lead. The Stars got to within 15-7 but a Jiran free throw and a jumper at the 11:19 mark gave the Eagles another double digit lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game.
The Eagles pushed their lead to 20 points after Jazmin Litte hit her first of three three-pointers with 2:56 left in the first half. Kortni Kohl would make it 42-19 with a three-pointer with 1:35 left but Angela Evola hit a jumper before half to make it 42-21 heading into the locker room. The Eagles were 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from deep in the first half and the Stars turned it over 14 times in the half.
Mariah Hill gave the Eagles their largest lead of the day after a triple just over five minutes into the second half to go up 59-28. From there the Eagles managed to keep at least a 20-point lead up until Jasmyn Hardin provided the Stars with their final bucket of the game with 55 seconds remaining. The Stars (42.3%, 22-of-52) ended up outshooting the Eagles (37.5%, 27-of-72) in the game but were haunted by 22 turnovers. The Eagles finished with eight three-pointers, their most in a game this season.
Jiran was one of four Eagles in double figures with 14 points and posted her second double double in three games by hauling in a career-high 15 rebounds. Little (13) and Dougherty (12) both posted career highs in points while Courtney Spangler (11) was the final Eagles player with at least 10 points.
Shamia Clark (13-10) and Hardin (12-10) both posted double doubles for the Stars while Claudia DeNigris (11) also found double digits for the Stars.Â
The Eagles will return home Wednesday Jan. 28 for a 7 pm game against Marian University in the Edgedome.Â
