St. Norbert's hot start too much for Eagles

MADISON, Wis. – Three goals within the first 30 minutes were enough for a St. Norbert College victory over Edgewood College Sunday afternoon in the Eagles' 2014 home opener. The Green Knights buried two goals just over one minute apart early and set the tone for the rest of the game and eventually won 4-1.

Edgewood College came out strong early in the second half by scoring a goal at the 46:28 mark from Henry Simon to make it 3-1. Simon, a sophomore midfielder from Kimberly, Wis., netted the goal from about 20 yards out and was his first of the season. Senior forward Kelmend Isaj notched the assist on the play.

St. Norbert's Calian Schrader shut down the momentum that the Eagles had gathered from the early second-half goal by scoring just under two minutes after Simon's tally. Thomas Gritton (16:20), Joe Fabich (17:28) and Sergio Villalpando (29:32) scored the other Green Knight goals on the day, and Edgewood College goaltender Matt Dammen was tagged with the loss. Kyle Wood relieved Dammen to start the second half and racked up two saves. Scott Faul recorded the win by stopping two Edgewood College shots in 61 minutes of playing time.

Simon, Isaj and senior Stephen Gilbert all had three shots on the day for the Eagles, while Gilbert was the lone player to record multiple shots on goal with two.

Edgewood College (0-3) gets back into action Thursday, Sep. 11 at home against Ripon College. The game will take place at Reddan Soccer Park in Verona, Wis., and is scheduled to begin at 8 pm.
