MIDDLETON, Wis. – Despite falling in two matches, the Edgewood College men's tennis team continues to show promise. The Eagles battled hard but lost to UW-La Crosse and Carthage College by scores of 8-1 on Saturday.
The day started with three straight losses to UW-La Crosse in doubles, but then Edgewood College made it interesting. The Eagles' No. 1 Austin Papenthien picked up his first win of the season in an intense matchup with Peter Stadum. After downing Stadum 6-0 in the first set, Papenthien lost in 7-6 (7-4) in the second. The two went to a 10-point tiebreaker where Papenthien snuck by with a 10-8 victory. Patrick Lagman fought tough at No. 2 singles, but fell in two straight sets after an extended first.
After Carthage College and UW-La Crosse took to the court at 4:00 p.m. it was the Eagles turn to take on the Red Men. Again Edgewood College started in a hole, but earned their lone victory in singles play. Freshman Brian Davenport took down Chris Conely in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 for Edgewood College's point in the match.
The Eagles will head to Oshkosh next weekend to battle UW-Oshkosh. The 3:00 p.m. matchup will be on Saturday, February 15.
